This is the sole surviving
example of a 1929 Hudson 4 door sedan automobile that was converted into a farm
truck. During the great depression
farms throughout the Midwest simply could not afford to purchase a truck.
This example was built by
the Umball Brothers of Sawyer, Kansas during the winter of 1933 and was
constructed from two each wrecked 1929 Greater Hudson 4 door Sedans.
One was hit in the rear and one was hit in the front.
The back of the cab is actually the back end of the sedan.
The frame was lengthened approximately 28 and both transmissions were
used back to back to obtain low gears for driving across wheat fields fully
loaded with 60 bushels of Kansas wheat. The
spokes from the original wire wheels were torched out and the hubs welded to cut
down Budd rims to increase the tire size for the heavy payload.
It was used until the
1950s then parked in the barn until the late 1970s when Harlan Thompson of
Harper, Kansas purchased it and displayed it at local events. Motorcycle collector Scott Hall of Wichita, Kansas purchased
it in 2001 and began a mechanical restoration, leaving the exterior much as it
was when built in 1933.
It will now be used as a
transport to carry antique motorcycles to many events through out the Midwest
and will be featured in many upcoming Harley Davidson events included the 100th
year anniversary celebration in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in August 2003.
